8-1 Learning Trip to the Landfill and Fun Excursion to Skate Country
On May 10, House 8-1 traveled to the landfill for a culminating activity to learning about composting, waste, methane gases and recycling in science class. The students were amazed to learn that every person produces a ton of garbage waste a year. They saw the garbage piled 17 stories high in the landfill. They learned the Dubuque landfill will be full in 40 short years if we keep producing waste at the rate we are. The students brainstormed ways to reduce their yearly waste. The day ended with a year end celebration at Skate Country.

Jungle Book Junior
On May 3-6, Roosevelt's FAME crew put on the production of Jungle Book Junior. It took all of the crews to work together as a team to have such a successful performance! Thank you to all of the wonderful staff, parents, and community members who helped make this a grand experience! Photos taken by Mrs. Lucy & Mrs. Cottrell.

Great job to all who participated!

Create a Slave Quilt
(click on photo for closer view!)

Earlier in March, students in 8-1 learned about traditions in slavery. They learned that slaves told stories of their traditions, spirit, and hardships in each quilt square. Each student created their own quilt square that describes something they learned about slave history. The finished product hangs in the social studies room. The quilt square examples shown here reflect squares that represent song and dance traditions, hardships, and jobs.
